The IDFC Facility organized a training on the topic: Green House Gas Accounting and Green Finance Instruments, in Bogota and Medellin

On 7th to 9th May 2024, the IDFC Facility organized a training on the topic: Green House Gas Accounting and Green Finance Instruments, in Bogota hosted by Bancoldex and Medellin. During 3 days we explored thanks to experts biodiversity and nature conservation, carbon accounting, data collection and measurement.

The objectives of the training week were to enhance technical and financial capacity of IDFC members on tracking progress and better informing decision-making about climate change by:

  • Building and strengthening the hard-skills competencies of members in understanding climate risks of investments and its relevance for operations.
  • Identifying core links between sustainable issues, finance, climate and biodiversity topics.
  • Providing knowledge for strategic (client) dialogue to develop business opportunities and strategic direction.
  • Improving the performance of climate experts, offering IDFC members (and external guests) visits of inspiring sites.

Summary of session 1 hosted by Bancoldex in Bogota:

The training introduced IDFC members to the fundamentals of carbon accounting and the science of carbon footprinting. The 18 sessions highlighted the importance and relevance of carbon accounting within financial institutions and explored global standards and protocols for greenhouse gases accounting. Emphasis was placed on setting boundaries and scopes to align with international standards, contributing to effective climate action and informed decision-making.

With practical exercises to help to reinforce each concept, participants learned how to identify emission sources, collect accurate activity data, and measure greenhouse gas emissions. Participants embarked on the journey of developing a robust carbon inventory, guided through a step-by-step process to ensure clarity and precision.

The training also provided the opportunity to the participants’ to see in first hand a sneak preview of the IDFC Tool “CarboMeter”, a cutting-edge solution designed to streamline carbon accounting processes in a harmonized way by IDFC members.

Summary of session 2 hosted by COMFAMA in Medellin:

The field trip to the festival “Act for the Living” explored human-centered approaches and enabled rich exchanges between peers. The goal of this session were to discover new techniques to gain professional skills in system thinking to implement change in organizations. Participants could benefit of collective intelligence to get insights in work dilemmas that they are confronted on their working daily basis, which helped them to focus on solutions and to move forward. With inspirational insights from speakers and hands-on pedagogy, the sessions strengthened participants’ soft skills to become actors and actresses of the transition.
